The dairy industry has come a long way, thanks to advancements in technology that help improve efficiency, animal health, and product quality. IGA Earth Week sponsor Merck Animal Health invited IGA CEO John Ross to visit Everett Williams of WDairy to learn how modern technology is transforming dairy farming and helping to ensure that consumers receive the best possible products.

WDairy is a third-generation family farm dedicated to producing high-quality dairy products. With approximately 2,100 milking cows and 2,500 young stock, managing such a large-scale operation requires precision, efficiency, and care. One of the key ways they achieve this is through the use of innovative technology designed to monitor animal health.

Individual Animal Monitoring

One of the most groundbreaking advancements in dairy farming is individual animal monitoring. Each cow is equipped with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag, a small ear tag that tracks vital data in real time. This system not only benefits the business but also improves animal welfare by ensuring each cow receives proper nutrition and health monitoring.

For instance, young calves enter designated stalls where RFID technology determines if it's time for them to eat. The system allows them to consume up to two liters of milk per feeding before restricting further access for a few hours, ensuring they maintain a healthy diet. Similarly, adult cows are monitored for walking speed, chewing patterns, and overall health indicators through a sophisticated data system.

Precision Milking

The farm utilizes automated milking technology that records vital data each time a cow enters the milking parlor. The system measures milk output, speed, and duration of milking sessions, ensuring optimal efficiency and animal comfort. Contrary to common misconceptions, milking machines are not attached to cows all day; instead, they operate for about four minutes per session, three times a day. This method has proven to be the most efficient for WDairy.

Once the milk is collected, it immediately enters a cooling system to preserve its quality. From there, three trucks per day transport the milk to processing plants, maintaining a seamless supply chain from farm to consumer.
