Tell Congress to Push Back the Food Traceability Implementation Deadline

Oct 18, 2024

The Food Traceability Enhancement Act (H.R. 7563) aims to reduce the burden of the FDA’s traceability rule while still enhancing food safety.

Initially intended to cover only ‘high risk’ foods, the current traceability rule applies to tens of thousands of low-risk items and requires extensive tracking and record-keeping across the supply chain, affecting farmers, suppliers, distributors, and retailers who must align their systems to share newly required data.

The rule goes into effect in January 2026, but without Congressional action, it’s unlikely food retailers will be able to comply on time. This bill pushes the implementation deadline back and provides more flexibility to ensure proper compliance.
